Modernism WOA

This piece of art does a good job connecting the American Dream to Modernism and how they go hand in hand. Modernism emphasized being an individual and exploring the best way to be successful. This is very similar to the principals of the American Dream. The American Dream was made to show people there is hope in the new land and that they can go from nothing to success if they put in the right effort. It also leads to the fact that the innovation of new ideas and technology can help aid the American Dream. The picture does a good job using the fence to help blend the picture into the flag. I believe that they chose a fence because this is a type of job that fits the American Dream. Another component of the American Dream is that you do not have to be the smartest and success is all based on how hard you work. Building a fence is not a hard task, but the more effort that you put in, there is a better chance that the fence will turn out nicer. These jobs that are considered to be “Blue Collar” are the type of jobs that gave less fortunate people hope in the American Dream. In fact, these jobs are still around today for the same reason. You do not need to be born into a rich family or become a rocket scientist to be successful. You are able to find something that fits your skill set and use your effort to take care of the rest.

  1. Hey Sam, I enjoyed reading your analysis of this work. When I saw this work I saw something completely different. The way I saw it was that the fence represents hurdles in trying to achieve what is called the American Dream. I thought about modern news regarding immigrants at the border trying to enter America to get to experience the American dream. I also thought about how immigrants currently living in America struggle so much to achieve the American dream because of how many laws are in place to prevent them from experiencing the liberties American citizens have. The person is shown looking at the sky as in a way of looking for hope to achieve the American dream. As a first generation student, it is no wonder why my interpretation would be this way since my parents were immigrants. Overall, I enjoyed reading about your perspective on this work and why you see it that way.

  3. Hi Sam, I like how you described the picture and I agree with you that being a rocket scientist doesn't make you successful because we all find success in different ways. Happiness cannot be acquired by the type of job you have or how much money you have, because there's people who have money but they can't find happiness. So I believe that we should all aspire to do things that make us happy rather than things that give us money.
