The Most Important Life Skill

Having a growth mindset is important not only for english but for life too. Ih the first video, I liked how she talked about the choice of words affecting the confidence of others. For example using “yet” helps give hope and confidence to a student who may be struggling. I also read, “Why rejection hurts so much” by Guy Winch, and “Why it's So Hard to Hear Negative Feedback” by Tim Herrera, which both go into detail about how we normally react to negative feedback. It is always harder to receive negative feedback, regardless how big or small, but it is important to learn from it and improve yourself. I heard a very interesting story on social media about a kid who was doing terrible in school and his life was going nowhere. His mom convinced him to take the SAT test, so he did. When he got his scores back he got around a 1500. He then realized that he was smart so he decided to start trying in school. He got good grades throughout the rest of high school and went to college and became a successful businessman. He then got a letter 10 years later telling him he was one of thirty-something people who was sent the wrong score. He actually received below a 1000 on the test. He then realized that it was not his god given ability holding him back, it was his mindset. Once he started acting like a “1500” then he became one. This is a great example of how a great approach and a growth mindset can help lead you to success no matter where you start off. In my lifetime I have had many times where I have received negative feedback. One great example of this is applying to college. I applied to many schools, some that were most definitely reaches, and got denied from some of them. I was initially upset but then took a step back to look at the full picture. I believe that the reason I failed or got denied is because I was trying to go outside my comfort zone and see how far I could strive. I believe that there is a positive to every failure and the people who are afraid to fail never make significant improvements to themselves. A very famous basketball player by the name of Steve Nath once said, “In order to improve, you must be comfortable being uncomfortable.”  I like this quote a lot because it does an excellent job catering to the importance of the growth mindset.
