The Affect of Art on Us

I believe that art is something that cannot be simply explained. To do my best to define it, I believe art is a creation that took time and effort and has an effect or meaning to anyone. There are so many forms of art that cater to so many different types of people. I also believe that we interact with art without even being conscious of it. Art is all around us in many different forms. One form of art that people “use” every day is music. Music is one of the most popular forms of art and people are unaware of this connection. In fact, I am listening to music right now while I am writing this. Music also has the ability to be very versatile and cater to many different types of people. People have their favorite genres and artists, some overlap with others. Each artist has their own style as well. Some artists do a good job of mixing the genres and bringing two different types of fan bases together. I think a great example of this is Diplo. Diplo is known for his electrical music style, but recently he has collaborated with country artists such as Morgan Wallen to create a hybrid of the two. Music is also an art form that can affect mood. People create playlists based on their mood or the event they are attending. For example, if I am going to my basketball game I would listen to music that would pump me up, but if I am doing my homework I will listen to more relaxing and calm music to help me focus. Whenever I am having a rough day I tend to listen to slower music to help relax myself and get in the correct mental state. I find it very interesting that people do not consciously make the connection that music is a form of art. I feel that it is an art form that we take for granted. Another form of art that we take for granted is the buildings that we live in or go to day to day. There are many forms of art that go into making a building, but to break it down it is the works of the engineer and the architect that create the “artwork” of the building. The engineer creates the function of the art while the architect creates the attractiveness of the art. As for the purpose of art, I believe that art is created to have a lasting effect on people. A great example of this is music again. There are songs that I hear that remind me of a certain time in my life, a person, or event somewhere I traveled. People also hang up art in their house to decor and represent themselves through art. The pieces that they choose to hang up can usually help you define what a person likes or is passionate about. People love to use art to express themselves without having to do it themselves. Architects often express themselves by the way they style their buildings. Each architect strives to have their own unique style that helps differentiate them from the rest. Overall art has a big impact on us, whether we are aware of it or not.

  1. What's up Sam, I really enjoyed reading your post. I thought your interpretation of Art and music as a whole to be quite tasteful. I must agree that for music to be enjoyed to it's fullest it should be accompanied by a fitting mood or activity. I touched upon this point in my Avatar post as I described my liking for Waylon Jennings. I liked your point about Art in the sense that it has the ability to affect everyone differently, I said similar things due to everyones different backgrounds and experiences. I was reluctant to hear your take on Diploids but I couldn't have said it better myself. I may not be a big fan of Diplo himself, but the diverse profile of artists he has collaborated with has improved my liking as a whole.
