Enlightenment Art Analyisis

I think this modern piece of art does a great job representing the enlightenment and how it is portrayed when we look back on it. When we think of the enlightenment, we think of the spread of ideas and how new ideas and ways of thinking can be created and spread like wildfire. Another interpretation that I had was with the gears in each head. The gears are similar but not exactly the same in each head, but then they connect in the middle the gears are the same in order to agree and build off the hypothetical idea or view. I think this represents that no two people think alike but we can meet together and “match gears” to help build off and improve ideas. As an exception, there will be and are always people with completely different “gears” or views and sometimes people won't be able to match up with certain ideas and come to a general consensus. I think that it is important to not feel like everyone has to agree with you to a certain degree and just come to terms with the fact that people are made up of “different gears”. With the enlightenment, especially ideas involving the government, people who are embedded in the high positions of a monarch do not want to willingly give up their power. That is why there was pushback, just like there is with all major changes, but eventually equality prevailed which has paved the path for our government today.

  1. Hello Sam, I really like the picture you have chosen for your critical analysis. It's a clean, simple piece with a clear focus on the value of rational thought and sharing ideas and I think it is a great example of how art today can reflect eras of the past. The detail about how people are made up of different gears is interesting, and not something I would have noticed on my own. I think the color scheme might also have some significance, with how the gears are lighter colored than the skin and faces.

  2. Hi Sam, I am new to your blog, and I must say that I enjoy it. Out of the other two blogs I have commented on for this week yours is the only one that had a modern work of art that relates to the enlightenment. I would not have noticed that the gears are different in each mind if you did not point it out. I think you made a great connection between this piece of art and the way of thinking during the enlightenment. Keep up the good work!

  3. What's up Sam, its funny because me and my best friend are exactly like this. I say that we are two sides of the same coin because we disagree a lot and have many different perspectives on things. Once we get together and brainstorm ideas the possibilities are literally endless. I agree with you not everyone has to agree with you, that's what makes conversations interesting too. I think your ideas are really good, keep expanding on them.

  4. I agree with this becasue it shows how similar people were and how everything clicked when people were together. Because if you think about when you are around someone for so long your ideas and way you think start to sync.

  5. Hey Sam,
I thought this picture depicted the enlightenment quite well due to it being a time of people sharing thoughts and reason. I thought it was clever how the artist portrayed the two peoples minds as gears. The picture reminded me of the saying “we’re on the same wave length”. I liked how you brought up the idea of gears fitting with one another and connecting it to how peoples “gears” don’t fit sometimes due to their different views.

  6. Hello Sam, that is a great representation of sharing ideas and I agree with your statement that everyone has a different gears. Human beings are quite unpredictable at times if only we could read minds but that would compromise all of our secrets and humans have a lot of secrets. Anyways, I would like to see more equality in today's society I believe people need to understand more about the meaning of equality because there isn't too much of that going on now. However, hopefully as we keep progressing into the future as a civilization we can become more enlightened enough to put our differences in regards to race behind.
